Our commitment to sustainability
We build raised beds the same way people used to build things before everything was outsourced and coated in chemicals. A Timberlane Gardens bed is made from a renewable resource, shaped by hand in a small workshop in Homer Glen, Illinois, using materials that are almost entirely American made. We believe sustainability isn’t a marketing slogan. It’s a supply chain you can trace, a product you can repair, and materials you can actually trust in the soil that feeds your family.
Why we use Select Cedar
We use sustainably sourced Select Cedar grown in the Pacific Northwest here in the USA. Cedar is one of the most renewable building materials in North America. It grows fast, it regenerates naturally, and it doesn’t require harmful treatments to make it durable. Our cedar is left completely untreated so you’re not putting chemicals, coatings, or preservatives into your garden soil. Cedar’s natural rot resistance is the entire point. Nature built it that way. We don’t interfere with it. You can learn more about how it compares to imported steel beds on our cedar vs metal raised garden beds page.
Untreated, chemical-free materials
Many garden products rely on coatings, paints, galvanization, or chemical finishes to survive the elements. We don’t. Every cedar component in our system is free of preservatives, stains, sealants, and synthetic finishes. Our joinery uses natural oak pegs, not metal fasteners or hardware that can rust into the soil. When you grow herbs, lettuce, greens, or vegetables in our beds, you’re growing food in direct contact with clean, natural materials, without added treatments that can leach into your soil. All of our raised beds are part of our easy-to-assemble cedar raised garden beds collection.
American-made materials, top to bottom
Nearly every part of a Timberlane Gardens raised bed is made in the USA. From the cedar lumber milled in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and Montana, to the oak dowels from Madison Mill in Ashland City, Tennessee, the U.S.-made screws we supply for optional brackets, the instruction paper, the box labels, and even the corrugated shipping boxes themselves, our components are domestic products supporting American jobs at every step. When you order from us, you’re supporting loggers, lumber mills, paper mills, printers, box manufacturers, hardware makers, and a family-run workshop in Illinois. You can see our full lineup of American-made garden products here: all gardening products.
Sustainable manufacturing, not mass manufacturing
Our workshop produces beds in small batches, which eliminates the waste and overproduction that come with mass manufacturing. Every board is cut by hand, inspected, and measured. We use the full board to minimize scrap. Any leftover cedar becomes shavings used for mulch, animal bedding, or soil improvement. Nothing is wasted. This is how woodworking is supposed to be done.
Repairable, reusable, long-lasting design
Tool-free joinery isn’t just convenience. It means repairs are simple and waste stays low. If a piece ever needs replacing, you swap a single board instead of replacing an entire bed. Oak pegs can be reused for years, and the cedar rails can be reconfigured, expanded, or repurposed. Our beds aren’t disposable. They’re meant to stay with you for a long time and adapt as your garden grows. You can review our warranty and product coverage for more detail.
Responsible packaging
Your raised bed arrives in a U.S.-made box with U.S.-made labels and printed instructions. We use recyclable cardboard and avoid foam, plastic fillers, or unnecessary packaging. It costs more to do things this way, but it’s consistent with the values we built this company on.
How we differ from overseas metal brands
Many metal raised bed brands advertise sustainability, but most are manufactured overseas using powder-coated steel with finishes and chemical processes that are not fully disclosed to consumers. There is often no transparency about the coatings, emissions, or environmental controls used in their production. We take a different approach. Our materials are traceable, local, and free from chemical treatments. Our manufacturing isn’t outsourced. It happens here, in our workshop, with domestic materials, transparent sourcing, and a direct line from raw lumber to the final product you receive. A small workshop with a large impact
We’re not a factory. We’re a family business that believes sustainability is measured by how and where a product is made, who it supports, and what it brings into your home garden. A Timberlane Gardens bed feeds into a chain of American workers who harvest, mill, manufacture, print, pack, and ship right here in the United States. When you buy from us, you’re supporting a more responsible way of building garden products, one that values clean materials, low waste, and the people behind every component. Frequently asked questions about sustainability
Are Timberlane Gardens cedar beds safe for organic gardening?
Yes. We use untreated Select Cedar boards and natural oak pegs in a mortise-and-tenon design, with no stains, sealants, or synthetic finishes added to the wood. That means there are no preservatives or coatings between your soil and your crops. Our beds are a strong fit for gardeners who care about organic methods and want to avoid unnecessary chemicals around their food.
Is your cedar treated or pressure-treated?
No. Our cedar is not pressure-treated and does not receive any chemical preservatives or wood treatments. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant on its own, which is why we chose it.
What parts of your beds are made in the USA?
Nearly everything. Our Select Cedar is milled in the Pacific Northwest, our oak dowels are made by Madison Mill in Ashland City, Tennessee, our screws for optional brackets are U.S.-made, and our boxes, labels, and instruction paper all come from American manufacturers.
How long will a Timberlane Gardens bed last?
With normal use and basic care, our cedar beds are designed to last for many seasons. Cedar weathers naturally, developing a silvery patina over time, but the structure remains strong. Individual rails can be replaced if needed. Our full coverage details are listed here: warranty and product coverage.
Why do you believe cedar is more sustainable than imported metal beds?
Our beds are made from a renewable wood resource, milled and assembled in the United States, using simple, repairable joinery. Many metal beds are manufactured overseas using powder-coated steel and longer, less transparent supply chains. For a full comparison, visit cedar vs metal raised garden beds.
What happens to your production waste?
We cut boards to maximize yield, then repurpose cedar offcuts as shavings for mulch, animal bedding, or soil improvement instead of sending them to the landfill.
